@Yeab:The fight against South African apartheid was a defining moment for the African continent, and many nations answered the call for solidarity. but today they are telling us, "Leave our country." It is very embarrassing
Here is how several countries contributed to this historic struggle:
🇪🇹 Ethiopia
A leading light in the fight, Ethiopia trained Nelson Mandela as a guerilla in 1962 and later offered to train 10,000 more freedom fighters. As a founding member of the UN and the OAU, it was a powerful diplomatic champion, relentlessly advocating for sanctions and the global isolation of the racist regime. For these unwavering efforts, President Cyril Ramaphosa has called Ethiopia's support “unforgettable,” with Mandela himself acknowledging its foundational role in his political life.
🇹🇿 Tanzania
A frontline state and a steadfast sanctuary, Tanzania served as the external headquarters for the African National Congress (ANC). Under President Julius Nyerere, its “moral courage” was crucial in sustaining the liberation movement. It fearlessly allowed armed groups to set up bases on its soil, directly challenging the apartheid state’s aggression and playing a key role in coordinating resistance across the region.
🇿🇼 Zimbabwe
Before its own independence in 1980 (as Rhodesia), the country harboured ANC operatives and allowed guerillas to infiltrate South Africa. After independence, under Robert Mugabe, it paid a heavy price for its support, as the apartheid regime retaliated by attempting to destabilise the Zimbabwean economy. Its soil also became the final resting place for many exiled freedom fighters, a debt of honour South Africa has since acknowledged.
