@litemindedtherapy: Most people don’t realize that how comfortable they feel speaking in groups was shaped long before they ever walked into one.. 👇🏻 If, growing up, attention felt inconsistent, conditional, or a little unpredictable, your nervous system likely learned that speaking was safest when the space felt contained. One person, clear focus and turn-taking. Or a sense of being “received.” So your body got good at waiting, at reading the room and holding back until it felt right. That can look like being articulate and engaged one-on-one… but going quiet in groups. Losing your train of thought. Needing to be invited in. Or feeling oddly disconnected even when you care about the people you’re with. As an adult, this is confusing because you might actually want to join in more. You might enjoy people, have things to say, and still find yourself hesitating. Not because you lack confidence but because your body is still running an old rule: don’t interrupt, don’t disrupt, don’t risk misattunement. Changing this usually isn’t about forcing yourself to be louder or more outgoing. It’s about slowly noticing the reflex to wait, to monitor, to stay contained - and sometimes choosing to enter the conversation before it feels perfectly safe. Letting yourself speak without a clear opening. Letting yourself interrupt. Trusting that connection doesn’t disappear just because you take up a little more space. That old strategy probably once protected your relationships but it doesn’t have to lead anymore. Who resonates? 👀 #socialanxiety #therapysession #therapytruths #highfunctioninganxiety #anxietytok

I don’t bother talking in group settings bc whenever I do, someone talks over me and nobody else was paying enough attention to ask what I was gonna say

I'm very well 1 on 1, but as soon as there's at least 1 extra person, the conversation is going to these 2.

What about the exact opposite? I have no problem talking in front of a group but I HATE one on one interaction, they make me so anxious and I’m so awkward and can’t make eye contact

auditory processing issues doesnt help! there's more going on, more to process, more to keep track of. before I process everything, figure out what im going to say and then when I can say it without interrupting, the convo has moved on and im starting all over again.

I am completely unable to talk in group settings unless picked on. Every school report I ever had from preschool to university said "needs to speak more in class" but nobody taught me how to do that. I'm an only child and I've never had any problem one to one. I am usually okay in my very close friendship group but the second I'm around strangers then nothing is being said.

And if the group is very loud and social you either keep quiet and just listen or you just talk fast to get a word in 😭 I hate that.

1 to 1 I can be more nervous because I fear running out of conversation . How do you deal with this ?

I’ll 28 and it’s debilitating for me. I’m fantastic at 1 on 1, but as soon as it’s a group I lose all confidence- I struggle with group chats, teams environments, online meetings at work, I hate it😭

Group is easier because I don’t have to carry 50% of the convo 😩 I can just get by with a few funny quips in a group setting
