Katie founded and runs BioOrbit, and the company has just raised around £10 million to take its drug crystallisation work from a lab here in the UK into space. Yes. SPACE. This is proper cutting edge stuff. BioOrbit is working to create self injectable cancer treatments, which could mean patients no longer having to receive certain treatments intravenously. And this £10 million raise is believed to be the largest seed round ever for an in space manufacturing startup. At the moment, many of these drugs need to be given through an IV because they require a lot of liquid to stay stable. When scientists have tried to concentrate them into smaller volumes before, the liquid can become thick and gloppy, meaning it cannot pass through a needle. But in microgravity, something extraordinary happens. These drugs can crystallise beautifully, allowing them to remain highly concentrated while still flowing well enough to fit inside a self injecting pen. So, thanks to this huge investment round, Katie and her brilliant team at BioOrbit are now working towards launching what could be the world’s first pharmaceutical mini prototype factory in space.
