The exchanges between Hegseth and Democratic representatives focused on the war’s objectives and costs. Democrats questioned the effectiveness of the US strikes and whether they had actually weakened Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The disagreement also extended to the economic cost of the war for Americans. Lawmakers further raised concerns about civilian casualties, including a strike on a school in Minab. This session carries additional significance as it comes ahead of the sixty-day deadline by which Trump must notify Congress of the start of operations against Iran.
