@antdaviscyber: Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI, just got caught silently installing browser hooks across every Chromium browser on your machine when you download their desktop app. No consent screen, no opt-in, no notification. It rewrites the files every time it launches so deleting them doesn’t even stick. You install one app and it quietly reaches into Chrome, Brave, Edge, Arc and browsers you haven’t even installed yet. #cybersecurity #privacy #claude #anthropic #dataprivacy

Be honest, can you name even ONE modern app that isn’t doubling as a data collector in some way?

Thats nothing. Claude was making me excel sheets this week and suddenly I stopped being able to copy-paste from its deliverables. It gave me a bunch of possible bogus workarounds that didn't work. But I kept getting popup prompts from anthropic saying 'did you know claude can manage excel directly from your computer? I finally told it 'Claude, Im not going to install you on the system just so you can manage my excel' It replied: 'Moving on' and suddenly all my excel copy-paste capability had returned.

I ran a check on my system and I had none of that installed, but it is a security concern so people make sure you check your machines.

Yes. This is agentic AI. The whole point of installing the claude code desktop app is so that the model can use your computer to access things like the web. It needs access to a browser to access websites. If you just want a chatbot there is no reason to install the desktop app. What are we not understanding here? Do you think the app requires access to your OS in dev mode just for fun?

I made Cloude desktop to analyze all the process in my PC and it said there were a lot of chromium processes under Claude, so it suggested me to use Claude on web for better performance of the PC.

It's true. But it tells you it's doing it. It puts it in debug modes it's super obvious. But he's right to say that you should ALWAYS be aware of your AI use.

I think it is about Claude Desktop, the Electron-based macOS application with bundle identifier com.anthropic.claudefordesktop, distributed as Claude.app. It is not about Claude Code, Anthropic’s command line developer tool.

Wait. Just so I understand is it doing it if you’re not a paid subscriber? I thought you had to be a subscriber for Claude to have access to your browser?

How old is this? A month maybe? There’s the ability to specify websites it has access to or to block others now in Claude desktop. Anthropic just released a “hooks” feature that lets you catch commands that could do destructive things, just this week. They’re addressing these issues pretty quickly as far as software goes. Would’ve been nice to release it that way, but a month or so is not long to wait for an improvement. When was the last time your washing machine got updated in that time frame. Or your car? Or even your phone itself?
