@jlterry1987: One of the greatest, and definitely one of the most controversial. There’s no excuse for a lot of the things he said or did, but he was still a poet nonetheless. One of my favorite singers and songwriters of all time. Outside of that, I can’t support a lot of what he stood for in the past. But I also wasn’t raised the way he was, and the things that were normalized to him growing up weren’t normalized to me. So I won’t put myself in his shoes or judge him—that’s for God, not me. Only God knows what’s in a person’s heart. I will say this: I once heard him say something I quote all the time. He said, “When I die, I don’t want anyone to walk past my casket and say it looks like I’m sleeping. I want them to say, ‘Damn, he looks dead as hell.’” He went on to explain that he wanted to use up every bit of life he was given—that when it was his time to go, his tank would be on empty. That’s always stuck with me. I try to live my life to the fullest, and I want to make sure my tank is on empty when my time comes. Rest in peace, David Allan Coe.
