preschool teacher here. the age appropriate time for children to learn to read and write is 4-5. in my class, kids should already know their numbers and some letters. throughout the year i teach their letters, phonics, and how to write letters and numbers and how to write their names.

am I the only one who noticed that people nowadays think that day care is a replacement for preschool?? im 20 and I went to preschool when I was 4 and learned letters numbers and shapes and basic math like adding and subtracting. does that not exist anymore ?

Our daughter is 3 she can read 4 letter words and below. She knows basic addition. We have been working on her writing it improves about every week. Schools here suck

What do y’all in these comments have against being the one to help your child learn? You SHOULD know your child better than anyone else and therefore be able to teach them much more efficiently. Plus, what’s the harm in trying? If they pick it up, great. If they don’t, you keep trying and now you have the assistance of a teacher trying while they’re at school.

that's a lie they're not expected to know much of anything if they know their letters and numbers it's an advantage. but if they don't know the basics it's not an issue the issue is the teachers that expect them to know everything before they start school. it's always good for them to have a head start but not required.

You can sell this to parents without scaring them. My son couldn’t write his name before kindergarten, but is doing things at a 1st grade level while in kindergarten.

I'm sorry but that isn't true at all. A child does not need to learn to read and write before kindergarten, yes it's awesome if they do but it's what kindergarten is for. I have 5 kids in school and only 2 knew to read and write before entering kindergarten. I am forever grateful for the kindergarten teachers at my kids school because once they graduated kindergarten they already knew how to read and left kindergarten on a 1st grade level. and that's with all 5 of my kids

I’ve been a pre-school and kindergarten teacher and I’ve never expected a child to know how to write their names until the middle of kindergarten. Also they learn letters and numbers in both but it’s expected to know later in kindergarten.
