Corrie McKeague was a 23-year-old Royal Air Force gunner whose disappearance became one of the most complex and widely reported missing person cases in recent British history. Stationed at RAF Honington in Suffolk, he went missing in the early hours of 24 September 2016 after a night out with friends in Bury St Edmunds. CCTV footage tracked McKeague through the town centre before showing him entering a narrow service area on Brentgovel Street at approximately 3:25 a.m. The location, used for storing large commercial waste bins, had no camera coverage beyond that point. Crucially, no footage ever showed him leaving. His mobile phone data indicated activity in that area for a short period afterwards before the signal was lost, reinforcing the belief that he did not exit the space. Suffolk Police initially treated the case as a missing person inquiry while also considering the possibility of foul play, abduction, or a voluntary disappearance. However, attention increasingly focused on an accidental scenario involving the waste bins. Officers identified a specific bin that was emptied shortly after McKeague was last seen, and data from the refuse lorry showed a significantly heavier load than expected, though this evidence was later debated due to inconsistencies in recorded weights. This led to a major search operation at the Milton landfill site, where the lorry had deposited its contents. Beginning in late 2016 and continuing into 2017, the search involved excavating and examining vast quantities of waste. Despite months of work and significant cost, no trace of McKeague was found, and the search was eventually called off. In 2018, an inquest concluded that the most likely explanation was that McKeague had d*ed after entering a bin and being transported to landfill. The coroner emphasised that this conclusion was based on the balance of probabilities rather than definitive proof, as no body or physical evidence was ever recovered. The case has continued to attract public attention, with ongoing questions from his family and scrutiny of aspects of the police investigation. The personal impact of McKeague’s disappearance extended beyond the investigation. Shortly after he went missing, his girlfriend discovered she was pregnant. McKeague never knew he was going to become a father. In 2017, she gave birth to a baby girl, a development that added a deeply emotional dimension to an already tragic case and has remained a significant part of its legacy. #truecrime #missingperson #raf #mystery #disappearance
