Chinua Achebe (1930–2013) was a Nigerian novelist, poet, and critic, best known for Things Fall Apart (1958), which has sold more than twenty million copies and has been translated into over fifty languages. The novel centres on the Igbo experience of British colonisation and its aftermath. Alongside his fiction, Achebe wrote extensively on politics and culture, arguing throughout his career that African writers had a duty to reclaim their societies' histories from colonial misrepresentation. In a 1988 interview on A World of Ideas with Bill Moyers, he challenged the assumption that Africa's post-independence struggles reflected a failure to absorb democratic values transmitted under colonial rule. The interview was recorded six years before the end of apartheid, when South Africa remained under white minority rule.
