@dr.matthew.parker: So why did I choose psychiatry? It’s a funny story. When I started medical school, I had really no idea what I wanted to pursue. I knew one thing was for sure–it wouldn’t be psychiatry. I figured I would pursue Emergency Medicine because it was what most of the students were doing–this was the medicine we saw on TV and this is what attracted many of us to the profession initially. As I got deeper into medical school and was going through my rotations, I started to see that I liked a lot of specialties, but I didn’t love anything. Psychiatry was my final rotation in 3rd year of medical school, and when I started, I found that it just fit. I loved the medicine, I found the history to be fascinating, and the people were the best part. More than 10 years later, I am very happy with this decision. What made you choose your career?
