I unfortunately fell for the guilt trip. Turned down my full ride to U of A and stayed home to help her with my bro and sis. I regret it everyday. I’m now 37 and it wasn’t worth it. She still says she never asked me to do that 🙄🙄.

Being first gen ain’t for the weak. My dad refused to give me his tax info to fill out my FAFSA. Fortunately, I handled EVERYTHING for my parents so I went on the IRS website to download his tax transcripts.

One time I got a scholarship for $500 and my dad said, it’s only $500. Yeah, $500 that you can’t even give me for uni.

These comments hurt my heart. So many broken dreams because of parents being irresponsible or haters.

I wish more people realized that their parents do not always have their best interests at heart.

I got into UCLA and my dad wanted me to commute so that I could help raise my sister. I went against his wishes and lived on campus. I was struggling with food insecurity and buying textbooks, and I mentioned it to my dad during one of our daily phone calls and he told me “te estás dando un lujo que no te mereces.” I graduated with two majors and I’m now half way through law school. Putting myself first was the hardest and best decision I ever made. Congrats on USC 🫶🏻

My grandma convinced my mom to go to Mexico for a week before she was set to go to her university that was a full ride. My grandma left her there when she was asleep and took my mom’s visa with her so my mom couldn’t leave.

When I got accepted to college it was 45 minutes away. I was the first of my family to go to college. and instead of my mom being happy she told me you can’t go and just ruined the experience for me. I did end up going and I graduated and paid off my student loans 6 years ago. Till this day she still tries to get credit for me going to college and I have to quickly reminder her she did not support me

I was a college counselor over the pandemic. One student I had that was top of her class, valedictorian, got a full ride and acceptance to UC Berkeley. Her mom didn’t “let her go” and she ended up a the local CC. I was devastated and that’s when I knew I couldn’t work in education.
