THE HISTORY OF SHEIKH MUJIBUR RAHMAN Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, popularly known as Bangabandhu (Friend of Bengal), is the undisputed Father of the Nation of Bangladesh, and his entire life is deeply connected with the history, culture, struggle, and eventual independence of the Bengali people, a life story that flows like a river full of passion, sacrifice, tragedy, and ultimate triumph. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born into a respected Muslim family, his father Sheikh Lutfar Rahman being a local serestadar (court clerk) and his mother Sheikh Sayera Khatun a pious homemaker. From an early age, Mujib was known among his friends and neighbors as a boy with courage, empathy, and natural leadership qualities. He was also very attentive to the sufferings of ordinary people; On 7 March 1971, at the Racecourse Ground (now Suhrawardy Udyan), Mujib delivered his historic speech before a million people. Though he did not explicitly declare independence, his message was unmistakable: *“এবারের সংগ্রাম আমাদের মুক্তির সংগ্রাম, এবারের সংগ্রাম আমাদের স্বাধীনতার সংগ্রাম।”* This speech became immortal, guiding the Bengali nation towards its final war of liberation. On the night of 25 March 1971, the Pakistan Army launched Operation Searchlight, unleashing a massacre on Dhaka. Mujibur Rahman was arrested and taken to West Pakistan. But before his arrest, he had given instructions to his colleagues to carry forward the struggle. The very next day, 26 March 1971, the independence of Bangladesh was proclaimed, and the nine-month Liberation War began. Throughout the war, Mujibur Rahman remained imprisoned in Pakistan, but his leadership symbol inspired freedom fighters. Meanwhile, the provisional government of Bangladesh operated from Mujibnagar in his name. After a bloody war that cost three million lives and untold suffering, Bangladesh achieved victory on 16 December 1971, with the surrender of Pakistani forces. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was released on 8 January 1972, after international pressure, and returned to independent Bangladesh on 10 January to an emotional reception by millions of people. As the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman faced daunting challenges. The new country was devastated—roads, bridges, industries, everything was destroyed, and millions of refugees had to be rehabilitated. Yet with his vision and determination, he worked to build the foundation of the nation. The 1972 Constitution of Bangladesh was enacted under his leadership, based on four fundamental principles: nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism. Mujib emphasized rebuilding agriculture, nationalizing industries, and gaining recognition for Bangladesh in the international community. He successfully secured membership in the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the OIC. However, the path was not easy. Economic difficulties, famine in 1974, and political unrest tested his government. In 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman introduced the one-party system BAKSAL (Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League), aiming to bring stability and unity, but it also drew criticism. Tragically, on 15 August 1975, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated in a military coup along with most of his family members at his Dhanmondi residence. The assassination was a catastrophe for Bangladesh, plunging the country into years of military rule.
