@kylevamvouris: Ai is a powerful tool but I think it’s causing a lot of people to go off the deep end.

I often wonder: if I so frequently catch AI making mistakes in areas where I do have expertise, how often is it giving me bad advice in areas where I don’t?

People are using AI to generate 40-page docs from a few bullet points, and then sending them to people who use AI to summarize them into bullet points.

I am currently advocating for establishing agreed upon AI etiquette at work. Do NOT ask me to read an AI generated document that you have not thoroughly reviewed and edited first, especially one where (for example) acronyms are defined incorrectly. It’s just rude.

I think it’s because folks are not using it as a sounding board or a tool, rather they’re using it as a replacement for thinking

I’m an attorney dealing with a pro se litigant who serves me (and tries to file with the courts) about 10 documents a day using AI. It includes the prompts.

I have a masters degree in creative writing and one of the things we were always taught was don’t use 20 words when three will do. AI uses 60,000 words when three would do.

I keep telling people this. you need expertise to be able to evaluate what AI is doing. It hallucinates 30-60% of the time. You need to be able to catch errors.

I have consulting clients who will do this. I deliver results and action items in a concise and short and to the point manner, but they will generate huge docs via AI and think that it trumps my suggestions and advice because it’s a huge doc. Takes forever to dig through and say nothing

As someone who grew up before therr was home computers, I've learned that the promises of technology often falls short of initial claims. AI products are a reflection of the user. Same old premise of crap in, crap out. AI can be a great tool, but that's it, a tool. Can I operate a saw? Yes. Can I build beautiful cabinets? No. Skill in the tools you use is important for relevence.

This is why it’s so important to teach critical thinking skills in schools. We don’t need to be experts in everything but we need to know HOW TO LEARN about anything.
