Lab values are a major part of the NCLEX and your daily clinical practice. Understanding the "Normal" range is the first step in identifying when your patient is in trouble. ⚡ ELECTROLYTES Sodium (Na+): 135–145 mEq/L (Think: Brain/Neurological) Potassium (K+): 3.5–5.0 mEq/L (Think: Heart/Electrical) Calcium (Ca+): 9.0–10.5 mg/dL (Think: Muscles/Bones) Magnesium (Mg+): 1.3–2.1 mEq/L (Think: DTRs/Relaxation) 💧 RENAL & GLUCOSE BUN: 10–20 mg/dL Creatinine: 0.6–1.2 mg/dL (The "gold standard" for kidney function!) Glucose: 70–110 mg/dL (Fasting) 🩸 HEMATOLOGY WBC: 5,000–10,000 /mm³ Hgb: 12–18 g/dL (Slightly lower for females, higher for males) Plt: 150,000–400,000 /mm³ 💡 NURSE TIP: Always look at the patient, not just the monitor. If the lab result looks "panic-worthy" but the patient is asymptomatic, always re-draw and verify before escalating! Which lab value was the hardest for you to memorize?
