I loved how the Blade movies really played into this and tied the vampires more to wealthy elites controlling the institutions of power more so than the actual vampiric strength

I also see "filthy rich romance" tropes pop up during recession, which makes me think that in times of financial uncertainty some of us would like to be saved from the challenges of poverty. It's not in a horror context though so maybe not what you're talking about. However I wouldn't say Twilight or TVD, etc are horror either. It's interesting how the horror genre bleeds into the romance genre sometimes. I'd love to see more of these.

fun take! vampires as a symbol draining society should be hitting us in the face again with how the economy is shaping, but I wanted to point out how well they function as a critique with the idea of there being no ethical consumption under capitalization. also I did want to hear your take on undertone if you've seen it because I found it was excellent, and its approach to how it presented the horror felt very psychological.

the way the confederacy repeatedly shows up in vampire media is so interesting, especially when the story very explicitly gives that background to characters the narrative wants us to read as conflicted and fighting inner demons, but still ultimately good. Jasper (twilight) and Damon (tvd) are both characters that are presented to us as redeemable, despite their wrongdoings and how they still struggle againsts their "worst instincts". TVD's inclusion of this narrative is particularly fascinating because it was something intentionally added into the show and Damon's vampire origins are rooted in that period, a compete deviation from the book series.
