I participated in a study at UW (Washington) that was measuring something like this. They put strain gauges on my 👀, before and after answering a huge questionnaire, and watching porn, in their lab… And paid me $60 bucks! 🤣

I feel like the most likely thing is that because alcohol lowers inhibitions & then essentially impairs your frontal lobe, which is used for judgement, it seems plausible that alcohol can literally cause you to not think logically, causing someone to do things under the influence they wouldn’t sober but not really have any reason as to why.

i feel like the line of questioning they used isn’t even super effective or accurate though, because alcohol increases impulsivity by lowering the time spent considering the action/consequences. so on paper there’s a lot of things they would likely still say “no” to, but in the heat of the moment inhibition would be lowered and impulsivity would be heightened.

What is interesting is how do scientists design those studies? Like, they have to also think about asking those questions in a proper manner and order so the answers wouldn’t be influenced by the idea “oh, they’re checking me for this or that”, so it’s supposed to be tricky or not? Like, if people know that they’re studied for rage after drinking they will probably downgrade their answers so they don’t seem like bad people or how doesn’t that work? Sounds interesting

I think the whole premise of those experiments is wrong and tainted by misconception. 1. people morality is subjective based or a number of factors. upbringing, religious beliefs, mental stability, education on different subjects and life experiences (abuse etc). 2. sober people don't really become more immoral when drunk as stated they tend to have a greater chance of bringing out their true moral beliefs when under the influence because their inhibitions are gone. the beliefs are still there they just care less about public opinion or getting caught. 3. personal moral dogma in general conversation doesn't always come out because most people worry how others perceive them. but it's still there in the private space.
