🌙 Poor sleep can work against everything you’re trying to accomplish with your nighttime skincare. And there is human data behind that. In a study of 60 women, poor sleepers showed more signs of intrinsic skin aging, greater transepidermal water loss and poorer skin barrier recovery. At 72 hours after barrier disruption, good sleepers had 30% greater barrier recovery than poor sleepers. So yes, I consider sleep part of my skincare routine. For Part 3 of Supplements That May Do More for Your Skin Than Skincare, I’m looking at three ingredients in Ritual Stress Relief: 🌸 28 mg affron® saffron
Supports sleep quality
Studied for insomnia symptoms
Increased evening melatonin in one randomized controlled trial 🌿 80 mg Shoden® ashwagandha
Supports the stress response
Studied for restorative sleep
Research has found improvements in measures including sleep quality and sleep efficiency, although the Shoden sleep trial used a different dose than Ritual 🧠 200 mg Suntheanine® L theanine
Promotes relaxation without acting as a sedative
May support sleep onset
Research supports improvements in subjective sleep quality Important distinction: Ritual Stress Relief is not a sleeping pill, and I’m not treating these three ingredients as interchangeable. Their evidence, mechanisms and studied doses differ. But if stress is interfering with your sleep, I would address that before expecting another overnight mask to compensate for poor recovery. Because your skin does some important recovery work while you sleep. Beauty sleep is biology. ✨ SCIENTIFIC REFERENCES Oyetakin White P, Suggs A, Koo B, Matsui MS, Yarosh D, Cooper KD, Baron ED.
