@calmmoneycoach: Buy the shoes that feel too expensive. Go to the restaurant that feels too nice. Take the trip. Life is so short. Plan for longevity but also have a plan to spend on purpose. Perkins said many die with most of their money still in the bank. Not because they didn’t earn enough. Because nobody ever told them it was okay to spend it. Frederick Vettese, the former chief actuary of Morneau Shepell, says the average Canadian retiree underspends their entire retirement. David Blanchett at Morningstar found the average 65-year-old couple withdraws just 2% a year. Half of what’s considered safe. Bill Perkins wrote a book called Die With Zero arguing this is a problem. He’s mostly right. For Canadians, the math is even more aggressive than he realized. This is the capstone of the retirement series. If it hit, the full picture is across the channel. Estate: Canada Has No Estate Tax → Widow’s Penalty → Trusts Retirement: 4% Rule → Spending Smile → Bond Tent → Annuities → CPP/OAS Floor → RRIF Mechanics #PersonalFinance #RetirementPlanning #CanadianFinance #FinancialPlanning #DieWithZero

If you're off work for a year, is it smart to withdraw some RRSP funds since your income will be very low? Even if you will just invest that money marginally?

RRSP doesn’t seem like a good investment strategy.

I just figured this out a couple of months ago. Given the tax burden, I’m way better off enjoying the money and helping my family now!

I like the idea of helping the children when they go through the harder periods of life. "University expenses" "starting a family" "divorce", "kids". I like going out for fancy family dinners. Taking a fancy trip and see the kids enjoy. I do not find pleasure in spending on fancy things, but I like to see the others enjoying it.

leaving anything on an rrif or RRSP is a big mistake if you are single! govt will take a bunch more in tax!

Brian, I have a question, I think my plan is the draw down my RRSP and invest into non registered over time so I don't even have an RRSP when I'm 71. idk. this might not work well though. but mainly because capital gains or dividends are taxed much less than RRSP withdrawals.

Yes! I just paid a HUGE tax bill for my aunt who passed last year. She’d be soc that so much went to taxes instead of her family.

So I'm single retired late 50s should I be moving my RRSP investments slowly over to my TFSA?

this book changed my life actually. like my ability to enjoy life at 79 vs 35 is vastly different. and that graph he shows time vs wealth. the people at the top right ( older and wealthier), why are you saving for? love it

My parents put so much into RRSPs, then my mom died at 68, but my dad can’t seem to get out of his money “plan” for the future even though he’s now a single retiree. Very frustrating!
