I believe it’s because they originally aired on tv with a different size ratio compared to what’s aired on streaming platforms. So they’re wider screen. - I see this on Buffy when I rewatch it and I’m like this was not what aired on tv lol.

This from lazy companies taking tv shows filmed for the 4:3 format and using the original footage (which is wider than 4:3) to do HD upscales/remasters without taking into account that they were not filmed or ever intended to be widescreen. This is why sets will be incomplete, crew members will be visible, etc. It is not a mistake on the part of the filmmakers. It is the company doing a conversion without respect to the original intent. If you ever see HD clips of Buffy, that is a prime example of a poor conversion.
