The debate was settled for me when I realised that there wasn't really a red button. The way I think of it is like this; you are with 100 people standing on the side of a train track and a train is coming. If you and 49 others all tie yourselves to the track, the train stops and nobody dies. Or you could all just not tie yourselves to the tracks at all. Nobody is initially in any danger. People only become in danger the moment they tie themselves to the tracks. And its not like you can watch and wait to see if people are going to tie themselves to the tracks. Obviously if 49 people were already tied down, you would join them because 50 are needed to stop the train. But if nobody was on the track, would you be the first? Why? It doesn't really make sense to put yourself at risk like that. Assuming everyone taking part in the hypothetical is an adult who can understand the hypothetical, then nobody should ever choose blue, because it incites the very dilemma that it seeks to resolve. There was no problem before the the button was pushed, and we could continue without any dilemma, or we could create one. In that sense pressing the blue button is self destructive. It's analogous to tying yourself to the tracks. I can understand why you might choose it, if it was a given that maybe 20% of the population were going to choose blue, if it was a given that someone chooses blue then I can understand pressing it, but it's just not given like that. We surely are assuming everyone understands the problem fully no?

bottom line, your win condition is everyone living. The person that picks red's win condition is themselves living. Neither side is irrational, it is just a question of priorities and who you are willing to take responsibility for.

I didn’t kill them - they killed themselves. Rephrase it like this: (1) pick red if you want a 100% chance of living; (2) pick blue if you want to live only if 50% of the people, alone and casting a vote which nobody will ever know, pick the button which puts them at risk of dying.
