They don’t even set the raw score for passing until they look at the data and decide what percentage they want to fail.

As a Texas teacher, we are so tired

Ridiculous, where is the rigor! Students need to be held to the same expectations as classrooms!

They decide it AFTER they score them!!!!

And the script you read to students this year in Texas literally had teachers say “this test can not make you fail the grade level”

The math questions are more of a reading comprehension with numbers in it. There really should be more questions based purely on computation and a few word problems.

Also a Texas teacher, and the sad part is that the STAAR test is so hard, most kids still can’t pass it.

🤭 :
The reason why the percentage is so low is because all of the STAAR tests are written way above grade level.

But, but, but....how else would the testing companies make tons of money off public education? It's all about the money.

The state testing is ridiculous. Teachers are teaching to the test because they have to. Get rid of them all!

I’ve been told that the reason the passing score is so low is because the test they take is two grade levels above the grade that they’re in. So if the student is in fourth grade, the reading level of the test will be sixth grade.

In Texas… 8th grade social studies is the hardest test with the highest cut score out of any content/grade level. Oh… and they change the cut scores depending on how the kids do. 8th SS has changed over the year from 55 to 53, then to 48, 43, back up to 48… how do you expect kids to do well when you keep changing the expected pass rate?!

I’m soooo tired of lowering expectations consistently instead of trying to solve the problem

It’s even worse than that, Gerry. In Texas, they grade the SCHOOLS based on students who Meet or Master, which is a minimum score of 55-60% on the test. So students pass with a lower score than the schools! And they change the passing score every year AFTER the results are in.

We also had to read directions verbatim that said the test could not be used as a grade and could not be used to retain them. Seconds before they took the test.

But the 8th grade social study STAAR reading level was 11th grade.

And every year is a different “passing” score. My first year teaching 5th reading the “passing” score was 36%. The next year it was 42%. But not only that, in 4th grade, it was 35% and then 36% for those years.

Brogan Boyce {Homeschool Mom} :
This is what I have been saying!! The reason is because the test is so incredibly developmentally inappropriate. There have been reading passages that were way above grade level for 3rd graders. The math test is more of a reading test. I taught 4th grade in Texas for 6 years. I now homeschool my own kids and I know my own kids would not do well on STAAR (one is dyslexic). I agree with testing to show growth. We use MAP Growth and it's useful.

By the time they get to 8th grade, the bulk of our kids just click through it since they aren't getting a grade for it anyway.

This proves how bad the test is and how the standards are not developmentally appropriate for students!

In all fairness, it’s written 2-3 grade levels above the tested grade so there’s that equalizer. 🙄

I absolutely HATE staar. However, I flip the script. I actually tell the students they need to get less than half correct. I tell them to aim for 50%. Honestly, it helps their stress!

As a principal are you allowed to audit the test to see if the other 24 questions are technically higher grade level? If so that’s a frustration level kids do not need to repeat over and over and over again and it adds another variable about why these tests are not only ineffective but also HARMFUL to children.
