@thattilechick: @HYDROBLOK VS CEMENT BOARD + LIQUID WATERPROOFING I wanted this to be as apples-to-apples as possible. Every step you see here is straight from manufacturer instructions. Nothing skipped, nothing rushed. The truth is that these steps CAN’T be shortened unless you’re cutting corners. On one side, you’ve got HydroBlok, an XPS foam board with a cement coating already waterproof all the way through. On the other side is cement board. It is not waterproof, so a full waterproofing system must be applied over it. That includes: taping and floating seams treating corners and changes of plane and applying multiple coats of liquid waterproofing at the proper thickness with cure time between each step. This is the minimum time required when both systems are installed correctly per the manufacturer's instructions. I would vouge to say that both systems are widely used, it’s a matter of process. Just like we don’t use horses and buggies anymore because there has been better, more efficient, and safer ways of travel, I would say this is a similar situation. Things like this through eternity have evolved so much over time that it’s no longer an argument of does it work? The difference here is the process, the time involved, and how much depends on proper application at each step.
