She was TWELVE! I actually have a theory that the mother TOOK the baby, Kimberly wanted to raise him as her own. Throughout the whole movie you see several times that she has a lot of control issues when it comes to being a mother. She clearly has control issues over every aspect of her life but the one with her being a mother is because she's scared that if she's not the perfect mother her baby will be taken again (which he was). When she and Calvin are arguing at the table she is nothing but fire until he mentions that he is going to take their son and she immediately lowers her tone and starts saying "you're not taking him". Then when Calvin does leave Kimberly acts very aloof, like she couldn't care less that he's leaving, until he picks up the baby. Then she immediately starts pleading and crying and begging him not to take her baby.
