1. Proto-graffiti
1. Proto-graffiti "Kilroy Was Here" (The whole world, 1940s) This is the forerunner of modern street art. A simple drawing of a balding man peering over the wall was left by American soldiers during World War II wherever they passed. It wasn't a political slogan, but it was a quiet protest against the dehumanization of war — a way of saying that I'm here, I'm alive, I'm human amid the chaos and destruction. 2. Dmitry Vrubel — "My God! Help me survive in the midst of this mortal love" (Berlin, 1990) The famous "Brotherly Kiss" on the east side of the Berlin Wall. Pay attention to the dense, almost suffocating composition of the faces of Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker. The artist took a real photo from 1979 and turned it into a powerful satire on the totalitarian political alliance. Graffiti has become the main symbol of the fall of the Iron Curtain. 3. Keith Haring — "Crack is Wack" (New York, 1986) A bright orange mural with Haring's signature contoured figures. He painted it illegally on an abandoned court in Harlem to protest the crack epidemic that was destroying young people and the absolute inaction of the authorities. The work resonated with the townspeople so much that the police did not arrest the artist, and the city took the graffiti under official protection. 4. Bobby Sands' political mural (Belfast, Northern Ireland, since 1981) Street walls in Ireland are an open book of fierce ethnopolitical conflict. This iconic mural depicts a smiling Bobby Sands, a member of the IRA (Irish Republican Army), who died in prison after 66 days on hunger strike. The drawing, framed by a massive chain, still serves as a reminder of the struggle of local Republicans for independence from the British crown. 5. Banksy — "Love is in the Air / Flower Thrower" (Jerusalem, 2003) Is perhaps the most recognizable anti-war image in the world. Banksy painted it on the concrete security wall separating Israel and Palestine. The guy in the mask froze in a dynamic, aggressive throw, but instead of a stone or a Molotov cocktail, there was a bouquet of flowers in his hand. This is a powerful call for a peaceful resolution of the protracted conflict. 6. Banksy — "Armored Dove" (Bethlehem, 2007) Another in-depth work by Banksy on the same dividing wall. A white dove, a classic biblical symbol of peace with an olive branch in its beak, is wearing a heavy army bulletproof vest, and a red sniper target is burning right on its chest. This is a tragic protest against the fact that in war zones, even the very idea of peace has no chance of surviving without protection. 7. Blu — "Cuvrystrasse Murals" (Berlin, 2007) Italian artist Blu created giant white figures in an abandoned wasteland in Kreuzberg. Look at the character who adjusts his tie while his hands are chained with a gold chain connecting two watches on his wrists — a harsh metaphor for the slavery of consumer society. For years, this mural has been a manifesto against gentrification (the displacement of the area's indigenous poor for the sake of commercial development). In 2014, the author himself painted it over with black paint so that developers would not use his art to increase the value of the land. 8. Ganzeer — "Tank versus Bicycle" (Cairo, 2011) This work was born at the peak of the Egyptian revolution. An artist has painted a huge, frighteningly detailed life-size military tank riding straight at a frail Cairo bread vendor on a bicycle.
