what happens if you are on a safety contract and you break one of the conditions you made? like if. you agreed to not harm yourself and you ended up in a bad place.

so the “contract” part is confusing me… what happens if the client “breaks the contract”? It sounds like there’s a penalty.

When I was 14, I went to a new therapist. She had me do one, but the safety contract stated what would happen if I did it, and it was that she’d get my mom in trouble and I’d go to my bio dad. Who was my abuser, and the reason for therapy. My mom stopped me seeing her especially since I didn’t feel I could be honest.

Safety Contracts make the possible relapse MUCH worse. Back when I was 15/16 I had a safety contract at a behavioral health residential. If I relapsed my contract said I had to lose all of my behavior points and go back down to level 1 (it was a reward system based on levels). I would also have to complete a mental health treatment workbook, and get put on Room Restriction (so I had to sleep in the lobby and wasnt allowed in my room). When I did relapse, it was the WORST I've ever had and I couldnt quit till MUCH later. Ofc this is a biased take... but just something to consider.

Safety contracts always seemed dismissive. Safety planning either verbal or written is super helpful. I’m sure your clients appreciate your approaches 💕

I’ve had contracts made with me more times than I can think of and not once when I was in crisis did I pull out my little safety paper and use it tbh. My new therapist and I have this thing we do every session and that alone has kept me from self harm more than any paper list ever has.

I hate the idea of that contract,I'm so glad my therapist didn't make me sign one, that and she signed a contract that she couldn't tell my mom anything without my permission!

I was let go in therapy once because I didn’t respect our safety contract. As a new social worker now, I find that crazy! It protects the professional, not the client. Glad to be hearing your take on this

I was only able to stop SH when therapists stopped pressuring me to. one told me that it seemed like something that helped and I didn't have many of those things. when it wasn't forbidden I wasn't obsessed with it

I will never do a safety contact that has no self harm on it, my therapist calls it safety contact but it’s more of a plan and will never get mad at me if I do end up hurting myself.

my first therapist would cancel our session that week if Id done anything risky whereas my current therapist we work on harm reduction and its actually helped I do risky things alot less and haven't had any incidents ending in hospitalisation in the past 8 months!
