Justin Fitzpatrick :
The proper test is a swab but it’s not available in Bali or it too expensive for most of the population. It’s not like USA or Canada, it’s not covered by insurance so doctors don’t offer it

Feb 2026, I had to ask for HSV 1 & HSV 2 (Genital herpes) to be tested in my STI panel. HSV 1 & 2 came back positive for antibodies. If I didn’t ask for HSV 1 & 2 to be included I wouldn’t have known I carried this. My HSV 2 variation is so mild - (my outbreaks - one ingrown hair like follicle is present). I accidentally came across it, went to GP had PCR test results came back positive HSV 2. HSV 1 - never presented with any symptoms and I’m 50. According to Lab Ref - HSV 1 likelihood transmission childhood.

HSV is not tested for in a routine STI test in Australia. You have to request it specifically. I was told my a sexual health nurse that they don’t test for it because it’s so stigmatised and so many people have it and don’t know that it would just be more harmful to their mental health that it is for your sexual health

Someone told me that they had to ask their Health Care Provider for these tests because apparently they are not being offered/suggested when you do an annual test. What i don't understand is...If this condition is so prevalent and contagious why isn't there mandatory screening/testing being done or more awareness brought to the public about it. It seems as though health care professionals just sweep it under the rug like it is not a big deal.
