@ellalowgren: five games. one argument. the defense rests. 🎮 which five games would you choose to defend the medium in a court of law? #GameTok #VideoGameTok #GamingTikTok #IndieGames #GamingCommunity
Soma, PT, Outer Wilds, Shadow of the Colossus, and Clair Obscur. All of these take full advantage of their medium and wouldn't be able to convey their full message in another medium.

i love how well these are explained without spoiling anything besides how good these games are.

For the same reasons you gave for Portal, I would nominate The Legend of Zelda (any of them).
Link has spoken (for once).

Disco Elysium is a testament to video games as an art form, it is atmospheric and approaches a lot of topics in a nuanced way that you simply can’t experience in any other medium, it gets you thinking differently about the world around you and embraces the fact that we all have our flaws and that no matter how far gone we think we are there’s still hope if you’re willing to put in the work.

for me it's The Stanley Parable and What Remains of Edith Finch, among others. The Stanley Parable forces you to see the game, narrator, and PC as separate entities that normally work together, but here clash constantly for control, showing what choice means in games. WROEF forces you to personally work through grief with the PC, in a way that feels more personal than a movie or novel ever could.

Also What Remains of Edith Finch, if only for the Lewis segment. You start by doing the same monotonous task that Lewis does every single day with one side of your controller, and then start to play through his imagination with the other. Eventually the monotonous task becomes so mundane and automatic that you don’t even realise you’re continuing to do it long after it disappears from the screen, which allows you to completely understand Lewis’ mind in a way that wouldn’t be possible in any other form of media. The way storytelling is created in that game is perfect, you understand each character so well because you take a step into their worlds.

unironically? the sims. no other medium would give you the ability to play god and create your own stories organically. the closest you could get to sims outside of a game format is probably either writing your own novel or script, but then you're not engaging with it as an audience, but as a creator

simply put i would choose any Hollow Knight or Dark Souls game as one of the video games. why ? well i don’t think any medium can evoke such a feeling of discovery, like were archeologists uncovering past worlds. through environmental storytelling and item descriptions, we are not spoon fed stories like we would be in a book. it much more ressembles what learning about a painting feels like. and on such a huge scale? only video games can do it

Also, unlike other mediums of entertainment and learning, video games can, and often do, prevent you from moving forward if you don't have the skill for where you are at. which alone sets it apart from any passive medium.

Bioshock “A man chooses, a slave obeys” wouldn’t have worked in any other medium because you’re the one making the choice to keep playing. Because we are used to games saying “go here, do that.” And we just go along with it. Bioshock asks us why and makes us actively think about what games (and people in real life) have us do. It sets us up to be better people more willing to question authority and directions.

Portal is the ultimate first video game. It teaches you how to move, and how to think in a first person 3d space, which most video games nowadays assume you already know how to do.

Yours is good, but I feel you could replace silent hill for The Outer Wilds. It’s one of the most profound experiences of my life and I’ll never play it for the first time again. The discovery and game mechanics deliver something no other media possibly can

I did my Honours thesis on a topic like this in 2014, focused on Journey (2012), Bastion (2011), and Bioshock (2007) as examples of narratives that needed to be games to work. Obviously a lot of games have come out since then, but I think they still hold up.

If storytelling is the oldest of arts, then arguably games are the best way to tell stories. The interaction can make it more personal through player choice (like Mass Effect) or more impactful through immersion (like Edith Finch)

I don’t know about 5, but I’d include Detroit become Human. Personally I found it thought provoking to what it means to be alive, consciousness and how we assign value to what life is/is not.

This War of Mine by 11bit was added to Polish high school reading curriculum (as an optional "read", but still), I think it would fit in here too. One of the few games that made me cry and in a way no other did, and the concept would never work in any other medium.

Outer Wilds needs to be in this list. The way you can only play this game once to really experience it is a great example of the uniqueness of games. you beat the game with your knowledge and nothing more. it also tells a wonderful story.

The Beginner's Guide presents a series of games as pieces of art, and then starts to question the curator's interpretation of said art. It's an hour and a half long but it's the video game story I think the most about

For a story that is best told through the medium, Life is Strange.
For making you feel like a genius, Baba is You.
For the sheer awe of discovery, The Outer Wilds.
For the essence of reward through perseverence, Claire Obscure Expedition 33.
For reflecting and teamwork, It Takes Two.
