So simple, yet so effective. In theory, this should be a very simple and easy exercise. We are tasking the hip flexors with their primary contractile function: to flex the hip. Ideally, the hip muscles should easily do this exercise while the pelvis and lower back remain still and stable. Ideally, the right hip feels like the left hip. Ideally, the weight of the pelvis remains in the middle regardless of which leg you are lifting. However, most people have drifted away from ideal hip function and will notice a challenge, imbalance, and instability - some may even find this painful. I know I first did when I first tried this exercise. My hips had suboptimal movement for so long that I couldn’t lift my leg without my back getting involved. My hips had become so used to not working by themselves that they were burning when it came time to do an exercise like this. Tired. Exhausted. And the right hip felt incredibly different than the left… No wonder why it hurt to bend forward, squat, or walk; each hip used different muscles to do the same motion, and my hips were so weak they couldn’t handle much stress, which then triggered surrounding muscles to chime in and help out (like the ones in my lower back.) Yikes. All this to say, give this exercise a try. Let me know in the comments below how it went! I’d love to hear about your experience with it! If you are looking for a full program to restore your ability to move with ease again, click the link in my bio :) #hip #hipflexorstrength #hipmobility #exercise #fyp #muscle #scoliosis #movement #legs
