@didyoucatchthis: The Hollywood Legend You Never Noticed @therealradioman If you remember the scene in Mr. Deeds where Deeds pays two kids $20,000 each for their bikes, you might also recall a random homeless man chiming in with the line, “School’s for fools.” It’s a quick, throwaway moment—but that man isn’t just an extra. He’s Radioman, a real-life behind-the-scenes legend in Hollywood. Radioman, whose real name is Craig Castaldo, is known for his signature look—always wearing a radio around his neck. Over the years, he’s become a staple on movie sets, appearing in more than 200 films, including The Departed, Zoolander, The Devil’s Advocate, Mr. Deeds, and Shutter Island. He’s even made cameo appearances in many of them, often playing himself. His journey into Hollywood began in 1991 on the set of The Fisher King, where he met Robin Williams. At the time, Williams was preparing to play a homeless character named Parry. After noticing Radioman and joking about their resemblance, Williams struck up a conversation that would lead to something unexpected. Radioman offered feedback on the role, explaining that the portrayal of homelessness felt too exaggerated. He even offered to show Williams how homeless individuals truly lived and behaved. That honesty paid off. Radioman was brought on as a consultant for the film, helping bring authenticity to the performance—reportedly in exchange for a few cases of beer and some cash. Over time, Radioman became more than just a familiar face on set. He built genuine friendships with stars like Billy Bob Thornton, Keanu Reeves, Christian Bale, John Goodman, and Tom Hanks. Today, he’s still a presence around film productions, often seen taking photos and collecting autographs while remaining a beloved figure in the industry. For someone who started on the outside looking in, Radioman has quietly become one of Hollywood’s most unique insiders.

Radio man hasn’t been around for years, nor will you ever see him in the streets. As a former NY’er, I’ve never in my life seen him and I’ve been around some filming spots like Batman and never seen him around.
