schools will go to any measure to avoid treating their students like real people & making learning actually interesting. and don’t say “it already is, you’re just being picky” or “you’re just addicted to your phone”, atm you ONLY get an interesting class if the teacher CHOOSES to teach it that way, the districts/education system itself does not gaf so long as the way they’re teaching isn’t illegal. clubs and extracurriculars or other events DO NOT COUNT, school should not be mind-numbingly boring almost every day, INCLUDING when it comes to the actual education aspect. schools could easily get rid of the “distraction problem” if the education system just paid their teachers enough to actually motivate more of them to do above the bare minimum and ensured that said teachers knew & implemented proper methods for keeping students engaged.

this!! but the “no phones” rule also does not consider any student with a disability and/or medical conditions. i have epilepsy and have a pass to keep my phone on me because i have a watch that detects seizures that syncs to my phone via bluetooth. i mean most people at my school just sneak their phones into their pockets but it’s still a bad rule in general

There is absolutely a happy medium. Phones should be kept in backpacks that are with the students. They don’t need to be taken away fully, but students should not be constantly on their phone during class.

Yes, the student should put their phone away to listen to the teacher and do their work. But us putting our phones in a pouch AWAY from our seats is genuinely not safe.

It’s because then they can cover up the school shootings or distort information coming from students during times of crisis. Which even if it wasn’t about school shootings, we have teachers touching kids and ICE. So let’s be honest what this is all for. Control. Oppression.

Students that don't want to pay attention in class aren't going to pay attention or participate in class, taking items or restricting their usage does not change that. The explained reasoning behind the decision also ignores many students that I personally know (including myself) that do better listening in class while doing something else. When I had this debate with a teacher (which was centered around phone use) she brought up how studies point to multitasking being impossible, this blatantly ignores the complexity of life, innate actions, and music helping with studying.
