I think the green colour was associated with green houses? (modern day red houses) but I'm just speculating

Hight end watches is fairly okay. But clock is not,cuz send clock(送钟) pronunce as “song zhong” which is as same as “送终” which means to pay one's last respects when they die

Giving a clock is a taboo in Chinese culture because the phrase "giving a clock" (sòng zhōng) sounds exactly like the phrase for attending a funeral or seeing someone off to their end.

My hospital record keeping system turns profile pictures black & white after the patient has passed. It’s a quick way to make sure you’re not charting on the wrong patient but it’s also so sad!!!

I definitely remember the clock thing. Also, I once tried to wear a headband with white flower to my then HK bf's graduation and his parents told me I definitely shouldn't 😅

the knife thing is a greek superstition too. one time I asked for a good chefs knife for Christmas and my mom made me pay her a dime so that it was a transaction, not a gift

I bought a green hat from a street market when I was exploring on my own. Wore it for the rest of the day. I had no idea. When I met up with my wife and family for dinner I was very quickly schooled!

I just give all of my friends money as gifts at this point because sometimes there are stuff that I buy and they don't like it because it crosses over what they like or what they believe in so I just Resort to passing them cash

It is my understanding in ancient China, there is a popular folktale about a traveling merchant and his unfaithful wife. To help her lover avoid being caught, the wife made her husband a bright green hat, telling him it would bring him luck and keep him safe on his long journeys. In reality, the hat was a signal. Whenever the lover saw the husband leave the house wearing the green hat, he knew it was safe to visit. When the husband eventually discovered the deception, the green hat became a symbol of his public humiliation.

The thing with knives and scissors is not just a Chinese superstition. It has been an old superstition in many European countries. But hats, candles and black and white pictures would also be strange things to give people.

Re: knives— when I was a kid, we were taught to give a penny if you were given a knife as then they were buying it off of you. My mom used to get Swiss Army knives as gifts lol. Canadian!
