The monitors don't just help with parent anxiety. It actually reads movements or oxygen levels and set off alarms. They are worth buying.

There's actually been some research out of Australia that has linked low levels of an enzyme with SIDS. Does not make it any less tragic but if this enzyme or lack thereof can be detected at birth it might go a long way to stopping this happening to other families. Condolences to this lovely mama. ❤️

I read somewhere once that because babies are so new that if the room gets too silent that baby sometimes forget to breathe and then they just never come back, it keeps them in a lighter stage of sleep because they can hear parents movements/coughs/snoring and sound machine. It reduces the risks by 50%.

@Brittney: I was so scared of this. My son would lay directly on me and I would have my hand right on his belly and I think with having a baby again I just didn’t sleep that deeply so if I thought he was not breathing or pulling away from me, I instantly woke up.

My son passed away just five days before his first birthday. What started as what seemed to be a simple cold turned into repeated hospitalizations because he wasn’t getting better, and despite all the testing, no one could explain why. Even after he passed away, we still didn’t have answers. It wasn’t until genetic testing was completed that we learned he had mitochondrial disease—a rare genetic disorder that can sometimes be mistaken for SIDS because it is so difficult to detect. The only reason the doctors pursued extensive genetic testing was because nothing about Jaden’s condition made sense medically. Had he passed away suddenly at home, we may never have known the true cause of his death and it likely would have been classified differently. Because of my experience, I strongly encourage parents to seek genetic counseling and consider comprehensive genetic testing, not just the standard prenatal screening. My prenatal testing came back normal because it did not include the full genetic panel that ultimately identified Jaden’s condition. I share this not to cause fear, but because knowledge can save lives and help families make informed decisions for the future. Rare genetic disorders are often invisible, misunderstood, and overlooked. My deepest condolences to you and your family. Losing a child is the most devastating pain imaginable. I am sharing my story because sometimes there is an underlying cause that deserves to be explored, and because greater awareness of rare genetic diseases may help other families find answers that we didn’t have.
