The ship doesnt move instantly when the lever moves in the engine room. The crew needs to shutdown the engine themselfs, then they move the lever to confirm

technically the ship CAN move without these machines its very inconvenient for large ships because the crew on the bridge making the orders has to run all the way down to the engine room just for one quick order
