Not enough travel influencers etc tell people about the passport thing in their little "6 things you must know before going to Japan" videos. If they DO mention having your passport on you, it's for some silly reason like tax free shopping or discounts. But because it's a legal requirement that can have consequences if you don't. To be honest I don't think half these influencers even know the law on this.

Ok so general tip. You should always have your passport with you. Japan is not the only one that does this. Maybe not this extreme but your passport is your ID card internationally. I understand being scared of losing it but like you should have it on you regardless…

Idk why anyone would ever not travel without a passport. It’s your identification while abroad & basically a universal system opposed to ID/driver’s license cards. I’ve been to Canada, Jamaica, Germany, and the UK, needed my passport on me at all times

Hopefully a helpful tip * if you're going to be staying in Japan for extended period definitely apply for student/visa id. they're pretty easy to get, just have your documents ready and clerks will help you process your paperwork. definitely less of a hassle to remember to than travel with your passport

You should always carry your passport anywhere you go internationally not just in Japan, but anywhere you go. It’s very important. You definitely need it with you all the time because yes, in case you get detained but also if something where to happen it easy to identify you as well.
