We just did this but added rubber mulch and a super cheap border. Glued the rubber mulch down, hopefully it works! Fingers crossed.

I did this. I live on Texas coast. The weeds will grow and break right through the tarp. You have to kill grass, lay down pea gravel. Bottom of pool will be rough to stand on but its worth the extra step

I would glue the rocks down around the pool that might make it a bit softer. You can get the spray glue from Amazon.

Do you take that pool down every year? we have the same and we leave it up with water in it. we're in Michigan so the top freezes. still good.
