Blow Pop was introduced in 1969 by the Charms division of Tootsie Roll Industries, expanding on the company’s existing line of lollipops by combining hard candy with a chewing gum center. At the time, filled candies were already popular, but the dual-texture design helped differentiate Blow Pops within the novelty confectionery market. The Charms brand itself dated back to the early 20th century and became widely known for square lollipops distributed in retail stores and military rations. After Tootsie Roll Industries acquired Charms in 1988, Blow Pops became one of the company’s flagship products, benefiting from expanded national distribution and marketing. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Blow Pops gained popularity through youth-focused advertising, bright packaging, and a rotating lineup of fruit flavors. The product’s appeal centered on its two-stage eating experience - first the hard candy shell, then the gum center - which extended consumption time compared to standard lollipops. Today, Blow Pops remain in continuous production and are considered one of the longest-running filled lollipop products in the U.S. candy market. Their format has influenced numerous spin-off and competitor candies, but the original gum-filled design introduced in 1969 remains largely unchanged.
