I get it. It’s hard to see the bigger picture when you’re surviving. I’m glad you realized this but still went and pursued your education. You’ll be in a better position to help your mom and sister. That’s how we break generational curses.

This hit close to home. I’m a POC from a lower income, single parent household. To afford college, I moved into a group home, in HS, to qualify for the college scholarship; they covered my entire bachelor’s degree plus 2 years of law school (I was ineligible for the scholarship my first year). Today I’m a licensed, practicing attorney. The grind and sacrifice were real, but moments like this remind me it was all worth it 🥹

USC gets a lot of crap for being expensive and coming off as elitist, but they will seriously bend over backward to help you. They are EXTREMELY generous and service oriented. They even have a program for local kids that will give you a free ride if you attend a particular program while in high school. I’m glad you persevered. Fight on. ✌🏻❤️💛✌🏻

but how could she not know how important it was for you to take those scholarships?? she wanted you to sacrifice for her decisions bc at the end of the day our parents lived their lives, made their choices, we didn't ask for any of it

I’m so happy for you! I wish I knew more in order to help my daughter but she was able to go to a community college and transfer out to SDSU and she’s gonna graduate in a couple of weeks with her Bachelors and I’m so proud of her!!

I’m am so inspired by your story. It gave me chills. Truly there is nothing more beautiful to me than seeing the e immigrant community succeed after all they live through. I was lucky enough to be born here and everyday I know that it was simply luck for me and nothing more.

The mental/emotional power they hold over you 💔 I went yet kept my 40-60hrs of work a week. I remember the endless nights in front of an empty building at 2am doing homework on the bench 🥺😢😞 but it broke chains of poverty. I was able to help them.

Same! I was in private school taking all these tests to keep my scholarships. I attended college at 15 years old. My parents didn’t pay for anything.

My parents wanted me to go to college so bad but then my dad had a stroke in my senior year and I decided to work after graduating make ends meet, I'm thinking of going back to school now since I'm more stable, my younger sister's are in the medical field and I'm very proud of them for taking that extra step and breaking a generational curse ❤️

These experiences can bring about complicated reactions and feelings and that’s ok. I very much relate to what you shared. My mom was a single mom who immigrated from ES, she worked hard at restaurants and housecleaning to provide for me and my sister. My mom wasn’t perfect and it took me a long time to better understand her struggles and sacrifices. I’m grateful she wanted the most for us and let others help mentor and guide me when she couldn’t. I went on to a fantastic and well-regarded top school and have a great career. My mom’s hard work changed the trajectory of my life and also my son ❤️
