TYPE 1 NASOLABIAL FOLDS — WHAT’S REALLY CAUSING THEM Type 1 nasolabial folds are not “extra skin.” They are created by a specific muscle that runs along the side of your nose and lifts the upper lip — the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi. When this muscle becomes shortened and tense, it starts pulling the tissue into a fold. That’s how the nasolabial line is formed. Not aging. Not skin. Tension. Most people try to work directly on the fold itself. But the fold is just the result — not the root cause. And here’s the mistake I see all the time: The technique looks simple… but it’s done on the skin, not on the muscle. If you’re not reaching the muscle — nothing changes. When you apply the technique correctly and do it consistently, every day, something very different starts to happen: — the muscle begins to release — the tension decreases — the pull on the tissue softens — and the skin gradually returns to its natural position That’s when the fold starts to visibly soften and fade.
