Their resting cord was clipped in a way that bypasses the energy absorber. Here’s what happens: * The resting cord is attached after the absorber on the via ferrata set * But the carabiner of that cord is also clipped back into the harness * In a fall, this can block or interfere with the shock absorber from deploying properly And that’s a big deal—because the whole point of a via ferrata set is to absorb the force of a fall. If that system doesn’t work as intended, the force goes straight into your body → higher risk of serious injury ⸻ ✅ Safer setup: Attach your resting cord directly to your harness loop (same place where your via ferrata set is connected), so it stays completely independent from the energy absorber system. ⸻ What surprised me most? I counted ~10 people using the exact same setup, all with rental gear. If you don't know things like this, don't go up the mountain. Yes, everyone has to learn! But basic safety with gear & behavior you need to learn BEFORE you go up. If you do it while going up it might as well be too late.

You clip it when stable and resting and there is no slack on the line. When actively climbing, you want the shock absorbing device to be able to deploy to lessen the "snap" of your fall before the line goes taut. I'm not a climber, but I wear fall arrest gear for work.

Basically clipped means immediate stop that can snap your back unclipped it acts more like a mild bungee cord

Did this guy attach the carabiner to gear loop?? In general the gear loop holds about 5kg.. so the break would deploy.. but yeah agreed this is crazy in any case.
