We let the basil flower and dry out in the fall/winter, and then shake it around before we pull it out at the roots. We get SO MANY plants from the seeds that fall out. I think we got a couple dozen this year.

I always get my plants to germinate great by covering them with cardboard until they are 1/4” tall.
