@tiffintech: Diamond sounds like the last thing you'd want in a computer chip. It doesn't conduct electricity at all but it conducts heat better than almost any material on Earth. That combination of the insulator and heat conductor is something silicon can never be. AND it's exactly what chips need. The thing I found really fascinating is how quickly we are moving on this. There's a company in Japan building the world's first diamond semiconductor factory. It opens this year. Diamond isn't as expensive as many ppl think. The price are artifially inflated and supply is controlled by one company. If they can lab grown a diamond on a budget than ig this is a good alternative

this could never work because it would push regular people to realize that diamonds aren't rare and that it's high price is artificial

Nice a freaking use for compressed carbon that isn’t for aesthetics !

Lab grown diamonds in scaled up manufacturing could make this quite affordable.

People freaking out about price of diamonds clearly never bought diamond-plated drills or grinding disks. They are more expensive, but not as much as the overpriced rings. Even when we didn't know how to make diamonds, they weren't that expensive. Then a marketing firm put a spin on it and they became this expensive thing.

Yeah but companies will charge extra for diamonds, just because it's culturally expensive, not physically

If you used diamonds instead of silicon on a 5090, you'd reach clocks of 10-30 GHz.

It's not about the price of a diamond, but it IS about the scarcity. Silicon is incredibly abundant and easily accessible unlike diamond. The cost of producing that voume of lab diamonds at scale would quickly outprice silicon, and would take much longer. As usual, it's gonna be about the money.
