Schools cannot LEGALLY hold students back a year anymore. That’s the issue. We can recommend that they redo a grade, but the decision is up to the parents. I have 4th graders at a kindergarten level that will move on to 5th grade next year. It’s heartbreaking.

As a reading teacher I have recommended retaining students who are performing two to three grade levels below their current grade level and parents have cursed me out, like I did something wrong. Bring back, holding the kids back when they aren’t meeting grade level expectations.

I taught a college course in English. I had no choice but to fail 3 students who never completed the required work set by the college. The college requested I change their grades to reflect “passing”. I refused and was not asked back. I stand behind my decision. 🤷🏼♀️

It’s the parents’ fault because learning starts at home 3-5 years before school even starts.

Teachers now get disciplined if they give too many D’s and Fs so guess what? Everybody gets a B or a C and their mortgage is paid and the students graduate.

I’m going to be honest as someone who is in my 2nd year in a school district… the vibe I get is the schools are more scared of getting sued and going to court than holding students and caregivers to an appropriate standard

capitalism has changed the idea of schooling from a public good done to build better adults to a business model where parents believe they are the customers.

Our district doesn't allow us to give 0s. Even if a child does not turn in the work we still have to give them a 50%. 50%! For literally doing nothing! It's infuriating.

I was so embarrassed when I got held back in 2nd grade, the last year before no kid left behind was passed. Now as an MBA holder, I’m grateful tbh 😭
