🇺🇸 Reno, Nevada — September 18, 2016 Just seconds before takeoff… everything went wrong. At the National Championship Air Races in Reno, pilot Thom Richard sat strapped inside his aircraft, “Hot Stuff,” preparing for the Formula One Gold final. Then his engine misfired. Following protocol, Richard immediately aborted the start. He shut the engine down, opened the canopy, and signaled to ground officials that he was no longer taking off. The warning was acknowledged. But another pilot never saw it. Competitor Steve Senegal continued accelerating down the runway, building speed for takeoff. Within moments— his aircraft slammed directly into Richard’s stationary plane at more than 60 mph. The collision was violent. Metal tore apart. Landing gear snapped off. The aircraft spun from the force of impact. Richard’s exposed head narrowly missed the incoming wing by inches. Instead, the impact struck his raised hand while the spinning propeller ripped through parts of the plane around him. It should have been fatal. But somehow— both pilots survived. Richard escaped with a severely injured hand, a result many described as miraculous considering how close the propeller came to his head. Although he initially hoped to race again, the crash financially destroyed his team. His insurance reportedly did not cover damage caused by another competitor, forcing the retirement of “Hot Stuff” and ending his racing career. A terrifying reminder that in air racing, a few seconds can mean the difference between survival and disaster. 🎥 Follow @darklens_30 for more dark true crime & shocking history like this. #viral #reels #aviation #History #story
