I work remotely for 6yrs now and we’ve never been required to turn our camera on and the company is still thriving!! It’s petty and should always be optional!

Neither of you are wrong in this situation actually. They're speaking from a managerial viewpoint. It's their responsibility to speak to you about this, and the point is true and valid. You aren't obligated if it's not explicitly written, but I can only assume no one knew why your cam was off. You didn't like it, so you left. Also valid. Congrats on the new position!

I personally think its unprofessional to have your camera off in a zoom meeting where other people have their camera on. If theres a valid reason to have it off that should have been communicated before the meeting started.

I ask my employees to communicate to me if they are under the weather and are unable to turn their camera on just so that I’m aware of the “why”. He was rude though.
