The Child of a Warning Nobody Heeded My father wrote about the Gulag. I write about the world that read him, applauded politely—and rebuilt it digitally. His prison had walls, watchtowers and guards. Mine has passwords, platforms and permissions. His state opened letters. Mine reads thoughts before they are finished. His censors blacked out sentences. Mine make them disappear. His neighbours learned not to speak. Mine learned to repeat the approved words loudly enough to be mistaken for believers. The old regime came for the dissident at midnight. The new one persuades the dissident to carry the surveillance device, accept the terms and conditions, surrender the evidence—and pay the monthly bill. No cattle car is required when a person can be removed from employment, banking, education, communication and public life without leaving her home. No official prison is necessary when reputation becomes the cell, isolation the sentence and compliance the only door marked EXIT. My father warned that the line between good and evil passes through every human heart. I would add: So does the line between citizen and functionary. Every person who says, I was only following policy moves that line. Every person who repeats a lie because the truth is inconvenient moves it. Every person who remains silent because someone else has been designated dangerous moves it. Tyranny does not begin with camps. It begins with categories. With records. With permissions. With neighbours deciding that what happens to the designated person is none of their concern. The Gulag is not merely a place. It is a method: Separate the person. Discredit the witness. Redefine dissent as pathology. Turn procedure into punishment. Make ordinary people afraid to be seen offering mercy. Then call it safety. If I were Solzhenitsyn’s daughter, I would not write to prove that history repeats itself exactly. It never does. I would write because power changes its clothing, its vocabulary and its technology—but seldom its appetite. I would write because the first duty of a witness is not to be believed. It is to leave a record. And I would leave mine plainly: I saw what you called progress. I recognized the machinery beneath it. I refused to become one of its operators. Just Tracy, Just ’Cause. Parsimony. Clarity. Virtue. FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES.
