This is why markups exist. If you’re wondering why it’s 2026 and we still haven’t gotten rid of the awkward and expensive experience, let me point you to a lawsuit that’s unfolding right now. If you didn’t know, Scout Motors has been trying to make a comeback for a couple of years now. I’m not even big on EVs, but their return is actually pretty interesting with a sharp looking electric truck. And one of the most exciting parts? They want to sell direct to consumer. No dealership. For new cars, that’s better for pretty much everyone. You’re not getting sold stuff you don’t need, and you’re not paying for all the dealership overhead baked into the price. But here’s where it gets messy. Scout is owned by Volkswagen. And Volkswagen’s dealer network is not happy about this at all. So what did they do? They sued Volkswagen to try and block Scout from going direct to consumer… because they believe they’re entitled to a cut. And the crazy part? Because of how these aincent laws were written, they might actually have a case. Franchise laws were set up to stop manufacturers from competing with their own dealers. It was an attempt to save small business, even if that business's only role is to play middleman and take a cut for doing little to nothing. So for this lawsuit, Volkswagen is basically saying, “Scout isn’t VW, it’s a new company.” Dealers are saying, “Yeah, no it’s not. It’s you in a different outfit.” So now you’ve got lawsuits popping up all over the place because every state has slightly different rules, and every dealer group wants their piece. And before you say it… what about Tesla? Yeah, Tesla is direct to consumer. But they got there as a brand new company with no dealer network to begin with. Even then, some states like Texas have pushed back hard. Tesla’s had to get creative, like selling cars out of state and shipping them in just to work around the rules. So to answer the original question… The reason you’re still dealing with dealerships, markups, and the whole experience is because these laws exist to protect that system instead of protecting you. And now the Scout lawsuit is one to watch, because if they win, this could actually change how cars are sold in the U.S. Maybe car prices could come down if someone’s salary wasn’t baked into the price. #cars #dealers #scoutmotors #carsoftiktokcontest
