@mum_makes_moolah: When I think about how my parents' generation lived... it still surprises me how different the money side of life used to feel. Not because people had more - they didn't - but because the basic costs of living weren't fighting against you every single day. Food shopping was food shopping ... not a 209 shock every week. A tank of petrol didn't make you panic. Planning a vacation wasn't a luxury decision. And if something unexpected happened? People could usually handle it without it completely derailing everything. Life wasn't perfect back then. People struggled too. But the structure of everyday expenses was completely different. It didn't drain your paycheck before the month even started. And here we are in 2026... Still trying to survive with the same single-income mindset our parents used in a world that was much cheaper, slower, and simpler. But our world changed: → Food costs changed → Housing changed → Bills changed → Technology changed → The cost of simply existing changed So maybe the way we earn money has to change too. Not to chase luxury. But to stay afloat. To have breathing room. To build options our parents never had access to. I grew up with a strong work ethic. My parents instilled that into me. I've worked full time since I was 16 and had four children along the way. I felt like I was doing everything right but our bank account and savings kept getting smaller... I realized that working hard at ONE income stream in a world that keeps getting more expensive... just isn't enough anymore. That's why I'm learning online income skills now. Not because I'm greedy... but because the old system just isn't built for the world we're living in. ✨Comment "START" if you want to learn how normal people are building a second income stream online - even with kids, a full life, or zero experience.

Expectations are different now ..we married in 1979.. had 3 children in the 80’s.. interest rates went as high as 15%.. council tax was introduced tripling the old rates system.. my hubby worked 6 days a week.. I worked two part time jobs .. one in the evening the other while children were at school.. we never went abroad .. choosing holiday parks in England as that’s what we could afford .. we had a banger of a car.. we could only afford one.. take aways were a birthday treat ..life simpler .. no subscriptions for tv and gym memberships.. no walking round with fancy coffees.. life wasn’t easier by any means but expectations are higher nowadays .. there’s always choice

I feel the opposite - I'm a teacher and my parents were teachers and my standard of living is so much higher now than it was growing up in the 90s. For example, I didn't go a holiday abroad until I was 15, whereas my 1 year old has already visited 9 countries! We could never have afforded something like sky/a TV package and while I don't choose to pay for that I could if I wanted to, and I do subscribe to Netflix and Disney. We had a takeaway maybe 2-3 times a year for birthdays whereas a takeaway in my house now is a few times a month. Growing up we could never have afforded a second car whereas my family now could if we wanted to. I feel like lots of luxuries are more easily within my grasp than they were for my parents.

Yea I’m not sure I agree with you there. I didn’t go abroad until I was 19, never had a takeaway, presents only on birthday and Christmas (a bummer when your birthday is December) and I can count on one hand how many times I went on a holiday. I think you said it in a comment. People’s expectations of what is ‘normal’ is different now too.

See I talked about this to my mam & she said they did have a shock every week with the grocery shopping but they just didn’t talk about it all in front of us as we were children & it wasn’t for us to know about. Yes they were able to survive on one income so that was different but my first trip on a plane was when I was 18 as a birthday present. None of us had swimming lessons growing up as my parents couldn’t afford it for all of us & it would have been unfair for just 1. And while house prices were lower, mortgage interest rates were a lot higher.

I grow up in the 80’s.. we didn’t have things like holidays abroad every year, new cars, fast foods, coffee shops, Sky tv etc.. I only went to the cinema twice in my full childhood! We played out daily & it didn’t cost anything! We would get a can of juice, chocolate bar & a packet of crisps as a Saturday night treat to watch Sat night tv entertainment.. life was more simple & bk then it didn’t cost as much to live as we simply didn’t spent it on what we do now..

See - my mum DID struggle wayyyy more than me now. I only got holidays because my aunt or nan took me. Mum worked full time nights while completing a nursing degree - we STRUGGLED. You were just lucky you didn’t see the struggle.

This is BS. Both my parents had to work 70 hrs a week and we still had to turn every coin. It’s all about spending

My parents counted every penny in the 80s. We didn’t have lots but we had enough. We went on caravan holidays , not abroad. We didn’t have lots of luxuries and ate at home all the time rather than takeaways. I know it’s hard now but people’s expectations are also higher.

3 weeks in America for the whole family more than once when I was a kid. You'd need a mortgage for that now!

Back then, important things were cheap and “extras” were insanely expensive. The opposite is true now. I’d rather have affordable important things …

People lived differently in the 80s and the decades prior to that. There were no mobile phone costs, no internet, clothes were really just what you could buy locally until catalogues began and no working class person owned designer gear. No one wanted their nails done, Botox, fillers - we rarely went out for a meal or had a takeaway and certainly never went abroad on holiday. But life was actually so much better! I’d swap it in a heartbeat! 💗

i feel like people think luxuries are necessities nowadays. subscriptions, multiple holidays, takeaways. these are treats but people want to afford everything they want on a basic wage, people just dont live within their means! x
