Not sure about anyone else - but I've seen trains come past before the crossing has finished lowering fully. Yes it's rare - but it can and does happen. I've seen trains come within seconds of the barrier being in place too. You don't ALWAYS have 10+ minutes delays in barrier time can happen - which is why you go by the light and auditory signal NOT just the barrier. Barriers can and have failed to lower before also. Not a gamble I'd take solo, let alone with a child.
