Two patients had the same injury and the same surgery. Six months later, one was back on his feet, grateful. One was still stuck in the dark. The difference wasn't in the spine or the operation. It was in how their mind met the pain signal. Pain isn't just a wire running up from your body. It's a signal your brain interprets — predicting what it means and deciding how much danger it represents, largely based on what you're already thinking. A brain braced for helplessness turns the volume up. A brain anchored in hope can genuinely turn it down. That's not a pep talk. That's how descending control of pain actually works. The injury is real. You don't pretend it away. You just refuse to let it become the whole story. I must love tomorrow more than I hate how I feel right now. When the pain flares, tell the truth. Then aim your attention at the next faithful step anyway. Same tissue. Different mind. A different kind of healing.
