Depending on how close I am with the person, I would pay but they would NOT get a gift from me. That will be my gift. If they said anything, I would say "you never said gifts are mandatory so made a choice."

It cost a lot to attend a wedding as in outfit, hotel rooms etc. plus’s the ‘gift’ I’d never pay admittance on top of that 🙄
